I've worn Diptyque Tam Dao on and off for 5 years. I've always admired Le Labo Santal 33 from a polite distance. This year I want to settle the Tam Dao vs Santal 33 question for good and commit to one of them as my main soft sandalwood signature.

Tam Dao is a sandalwood meditation. Creamy, slightly sweet, with a soft floral edge from the rose and the myrtle. Doesn't project far. Rewards the wearer more than the room. Many people who wear Tam Dao describe it as feeling like a comfortable sweater you only put on at home.
Santal 33 is a public-facing sandalwood. Cardamom + iris keep the top brighter and the iso e super pushes projection well past your collar. Signals: I am a person with niche taste. Tam Dao doesn't signal anything to anyone but you.
For quiet over loud by your own framing, the answer is Tam Dao.
That said, there's a real argument for Santal 33 if you want a sandalwood that holds up at distance. Tam Dao does not. If you spend most of your scented hours in close-quarters meetings, Tam Dao gives you a private experience. If you spend most of them moving through public spaces, Santal 33 will give you something Tam Dao cannot.
My personal pick remains Tam Dao because I value the intimacy. But I wouldn't argue with someone who picks Santal 33 for its presence
