Santal 33 is ~240 EUR for the 50ml. Can't justify it atm. Every Santal 33 dupe I've tried smells like a chemical version of itself within an hour. The iso e super in cheap dupes goes from smoky and dry to the smell of a printer cartridge
Are there genuinely good alternatives at 80 EUR or under that capture the cardamom-leather-sandalwood character without the chemical decay? Or am I better off saving up for the real thing?

Stop chasing direct dupes. Reason cheap Santal 33 dupes feel cheap is because Santal 33 is mostly built from synthetic woods, and those synthetics are expensive to use well. A budget budget cannot recreate them cleanly.
Instead, do this layering combo:
- Buy a 30 EUR small bottle of Lattafa Khamrah or another mid-tier woody-spicy fragrance with a real cardamom + amber base.
- Add a 15 EUR vial of real sandalwood oil from a reputable indie source.
- Apply one drop of the oil on a wrist, spray the Lattafa over it.
This gives you actual sandalwood character (which Santal 33 itself only suggests using synthetics) + a cardamom-amber spray for projection. Total cost ~45 EUR.
The result is not Santal 33 in the strict sense. Its something better: a sandalwood that's more honest about being sandalwood. People who pay 240 EUR for Santal 33 are mostly paying for a recognisable mood. You can build that mood for 45 EUR with better materials

Office angle: Zara Sandalwood is genuinely office-friendly. The synthetic decay mads mentioned is real but starts at hour 5, by which point your out the door. For a daily 9 to 5 wear it's more than reasonable.
Original asker. Tried sams layering trick and it actually worked better than I expected. Lattafa Khamrah at 28 EUR + a 10ml indie sandalwood at 22 EUR. Wearing it for two weeks, the synthetic edge I hated in cheap dupes is just gone.
Eventually I might still want Tam Dao or even Santal 33 itself. For now this combo solves my problem
