Creed Aventus vs Initio Side Effect, which one is the better office fragrance?
TL;DRAventus = safer office choice if your office is meeting-room culture. Side Effect = better for creative or evening offices. Aventus broadcasts confidence; Side Effect has more presence but riskier in elevators 馃憣
stuck between two bottles for my next office fragrance and id love a structured comparison from ppl whove lived with both.
Creed Aventus, ~360 EUR for 100ml. pineapple, smokey birch, oakmoss, ambergris. classic compliment magnet.
Initio Side Effect, ~240 EUR for 90ml. rum, tobacco, vanilla, saffron, amber, broom. newer school, smaller bottle, sweeter profile.
i work in architecture, in client meetings most days, occasional site visits, occasional dinners with developers. want something that signals i take myself seriously without being the loudest person in the room 馃
which one would u actually wear to work for the next year?

ive worn both for extended periods. my recommendation for an office-heavy schedule is Aventus, with a clear reason and a clear caveat.
reason: Aventus is a polished, broadly-loved fragrance that almost never reads wrong in a meeting. pineapple top stays bright for the first hour, the smokey birch + ambergris settle into a confident, slightly aristocratic dry-down. ppl dont just compliment Aventus. they remember the wearer as competent.
caveat: Aventus has been heavily reformulated over the last decade and bottle-to-bottle variation is real. buy from a trusted source and ask about the batch code. some 2023 and 2024 batches have been complained about for being thinner.
Side Effect is genuinely beautiful, but the rum-tobacco profile is loud in tight spaces. ive had to apply less of it in elevators on three separate occasions, and thats the tell. a truly office-correct fragrance never asks for that discipline.
if your day is fifty per cent meetings and fifty per cent evenings, get a 100ml of Aventus and a 5ml decant of Side Effect for the evenings. thats the most rational allocation of 360 EUR plus a little extra in this category 馃憣
they occupy genuinely different niches. quick orientation:
- Aventus is fresh-fruity-smoky with a confident sillage. built for daytime impression-making.
- Side Effect is sweet-spirituous-tobacco oriental. built for late afternoon and evening warmth.
for an architecture client in the morning, Aventus reads more correctly. for a developer dinner at 8, Side Effect reads more correctly.
so the honest answer is u may want both, but if u must pick one, the answer depends on which half of your day matters more.
reformulation is real but mostly within a half-step range, not day-and-night. recent batches have a slightly thinner pineapple top and a less prominent smokey birch. dry-down is largely the same.
practical advice: buy from an authorised retailer, save the batch code. if a bottle ever feels significantly off, Creed customer service is generally cooperative on returns.
Side Effect has been more consistent in batches ive tried 馃憣
disagreeing slightly with giancarlo. i find Aventus a touch loud at close range too, and Side Effect actually quieter when applied with discipline (one spray at the chest, never on the neck). the sweetness in Side Effect is definitely real, but it sits closer to the body.
genuinely depends on how heavy-handed u spray. Side Effect is more forgiving for someone who tends to over-apply.
slightly different angle: cost per wear over a 5 year horizon.
Aventus 100ml at 360 EUR, used at 3 sprays per wear, gives roughly 330 wears. ~1.10 EUR per wear if u finish the bottle in 5 years.
Side Effect 90ml at 240 EUR, used at 2 sprays per wear (cuz its denser), gives roughly 450 wears. ~0.55 EUR per wear over the same horizon.
Side Effect is the more rational purchase per use. Aventus is the more rational purchase per impression on the room.
both are mainstream-niche compliment magnets at this point. if ur an architect and u want clients to remember u for the work and not for the guy who smells very expensive, consider stepping outside this question entirely.
Etat Libre d'Orange Bendelirious or Maison Margiela Replica At the Barbers both cost less and would probably do more for your professional identity.
just an outside-the-box note. Aventus is the safe answer to your stated question.
original asker, thanks both. the Aventus is more office-correct framing helps even if i end up choosing the other one.
one follow up: how much does Aventus's reformulation issue actually matter? is it day-and-night different or is it like a wine vintage where some years are better than others?
update for posterity. i bought a fresh 100ml of Aventus from an authorised counter (batch checked), kept a 5ml decant of Side Effect for evenings, and used what i saved on a 5ml of At the Barbers per sams suggestion 馃敟
6 weeks in, i wear Aventus 3 or 4 days a week to client meetings, At the Barbers on solo working days, and Side Effect maybe twice a month at evenings. best decision in this category ive made.
