I have worn Dior Sauvage for five years. What should I switch to as a next step up?
TL;DRif u like Sauvage's fresh-woody-ambroxan profile: Mancera Cedrat Boise, Parfums de Marly Layton, or Initio Side Effect (sweeter). all give more depth than Sauvage without abandoning its DNA 馃憣
im 31, ive worn Dior Sauvage almost daily since i was 26, and im ready to admit i wanna grow up a little 馃槄
i dont hate Sauvage. reason i picked it was because it was easy: i sprayed it, ppl said i smelled good, end of story. but im also aware its one of the most worn fragrances in the world and id like something a little more personal.
constraints:
- want something that feels related, not a totally different family. fresh-woody-ambroxan is fine, just want it less generic.
- budget up to 220 EUR for a 100ml.
- i work in finance, so projection has to behave in elevators and meeting rooms.
whats the next step up that doesnt require me to relearn fragrance from scratch? 馃

Sorted by accepted, then votesclassic Sauvage upgrade path question, very fair to ask, and theres a clear answer.
three fragrances id put in front of u, in order of how much they feel like Sauvage:
- Mancera Cedrat Boise ~110 EUR. closest spiritual neighbour. lemon + cedar, ambroxan-adjacent diffusion, but a much cleaner woody dry-down. ppl who already love Sauvage usually love this on the first wearing.
- Parfums de Marly Layton ~220 EUR. sweeter, more sophisticated, with apple, lavender, cardamom, and a soft tonka base. still safe in a meeting room, much more personal.
- Initio Side Effect ~240 EUR (a stretch on your budget). tobacco, rum, almond, and amber. very different on paper, but it scratches the same compliment magnet itch with much more depth.
start with samples of all three. specific suggestion: spend 3 days in Cedrat Boise, 3 in Layton, 3 in Side Effect. whichever one u reach for at the end of those 9 days is your next bottle 馃憣
useful framing for any Sauvage wearer thinking about an upgrade. the thing Sauvage does well is broadcast a clean, modern, masculine signal. the thing it does poorly is have an identity thats yours.
Cedrat Boise gives u the same broadcast with a softer signature. Layton gives u a slightly more romantic personality. Side Effect gives u a strong personality at the cost of safety.
my personal recommendation for someone in finance is Layton. its what Sauvage wouldve been if Sauvage had taste.
mads here. adding the technical reason these recommendations work.
Sauvage's signature comes from a heavy ambroxan dose + a metallic-bright bergamot top. Cedrat Boise replaces the metallic bergamot with a fresh lemon-cedar pairing while keeping similar diffusion behaviour. Layton replaces ambroxan with a tonka + amber base, swapping radiance for warmth. Side Effect replaces freshness with a tobacco-amber gourmand structure entirely.
the least relearning required pick: Cedrat Boise. the most growth at low cognitive cost: Layton 馃憣
office reality check from another suit-wearing context. Layton is the safest answer for a meeting-heavy schedule. Cedrat Boise close second. Side Effect can be too much for an 8am meeting.
one outside-the-box pick for u: Penhaligons Sartorial. lavender, oakmoss, leather, slight beeswax. its Sauvage's grandfather, in a good way. ~170 EUR.
camille here. as a once-Sauvage wearer myself, ill share what worked for me. i didnt upgrade, i diversified.
kept a small bottle of Sauvage for days when i genuinely wanted a low-effort signal. added Layton for evenings, and a bottle of Herm猫s Terre d'Herm猫s for relaxed weekends. three bottles, no overlap.
two years later i no longer reach for Sauvage at all, but i never had to make a single hard decision. the fragrance retired itself.
one opinion u didnt ask for: dont stop at the next bottle.
buy Cedrat Boise or Layton, but also buy a 5ml sample set of three fragrances thatre nothing like Sauvage at all. a real chypre. a real oriental. a salty aquatic. wear them once a month each. ull learn what u actually like as opposed to what uve been wearing because nobody told u to try anything else.
finance-meeting friendly mediterranean alternative: Acqua di Parma Colonia Pura. lighter than Sauvage, more elegant, very office safe. wont give u projection but will give u a clean, recognisable signature. about 130 EUR 馃尶
layering tip if u do end up with both Sauvage and Cedrat Boise: do not layer them. theyll fight on the ambroxan-adjacent diffusion and ull smell like a 2019 Uber 馃拃
original asker, six weeks later. bought Layton at 215 EUR for 125ml. the first time i wore it to a meeting two senior colleagues asked me about it 馃敟
Sauvage went into the drawer. probably staying there.
thanks all, alex's structured shortlist was exactly what i needed.
- Al Haramain Perfumes L'Aventure

- Al-Rehab Soft
